CNNH Community Education Series for Caregivers and Professionals

Community workshops geared for parents and professionals working with children with learning difficulties, Epilepsy, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders and other neurological disorders will be offered at the new, state-of-the-art CNNH facility at 250 Haddonfield-Berlin Road in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. CNNH expert clinicians will offer skills to help identify the signs and symptoms associated with a particular disability and the methods and strategies to use in addressing challenging behavioral situations. Anyone interested in the topic is welcome to attend free-of-charge; however, we do request advance notice in order to accommodate everyone.

February 24th, 3:30-5:00pm- Using Creative Arts in Therapy
Creative Arts programs provide more opportunities for the development of social skills, self-awareness, expressive language, self-esteem, and adaptive coping skills. This presentation will provide information on using music, art, and theatre as a therapy technique. Special emphases will be given to the use of music activities to increase eye contact, conversation skills, play skills, etc. Participants will learn a variety of songs and receive resources to offer in a therapeutic or classroom setting. This workshop is designed for K-2nd grade teachers, but all are welcome!

February 29th, 9:00-11:00am- Oppositional Defiant Disorder (Presented at Medford Memorial Middle School)
Oppositional defiant disorder is a pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures. It is more common in boys than in girls and affects approximately 20% of school-age children. Behaviors associated with ODD may appear as early as the preschool years but typically present by 8 years of age. This workshop will review the symptom presentation commonly observed in children with ODD, related social impairments, and therapeutic recommendations for both the child and the family as well as recommendations for the school setting.

March 7th, 4:00-5:30pm- Concussions & Kids: No Schoolwork, No Sports, No Texting!
Students who experience a concussion require strict monitoring, individualized treatments and return-to-sports, and return-to-school decisions. For treatment of concussions to be successful, the brain must be allowed adequate rest and time to heal. Recently published consensus recommendations of an international panel of experts point to the critical role of clinicians, parents, and teachers in concussion follow-up. Learn to evaluate the most important signs and symptoms of concussion and implement effective interventions – including elements of a 504 plan – to prevent further injury and to facilitate recovery. This workshop is designed for parents, teachers, therapists, and CST, but all are welcome!

April 2nd, 9:30-11:00am- World Autism Day: Advocating for Autism
Navigating a vast system of Autism education, support and insurance resources can be overwhelming for parents. New Jersey parents often times look to the NJ Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN) for assistance. This workshop will be conducted by a SPAN representative to offer information about changes in insurance laws related to Autism and other educational resources. This workshop is designed for parents and caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities.

April 9th, 9:00-10:30am- How to Use Positive Behavioral Supports to Support Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Board Certified Behavior Analysts will describe how to implement positive behavioral supports in the classroom and at home to create optimal learning environments for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Issues such as potty training, sleep issues and classroom strategies will be explored. This workshop is designed for teachers and CST, but all are welcome!

April 18th, 9:00-10:30am- Early Intervention and Strategies to Assess and Address Autism
Early diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders translates into improved outcomes! April 18th, 7:00-8:00pm- *Webinar Only* Autism and Epilepsy hosted by Epilepsy Foundation of NJ
Epilepsy can occur in up to 40% of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), associated with an increasing risk with age. Epilepsy and Autism may have common origins, so that understanding the causes of Epilepsy can give insight into the mechanisms of ASDs. Since Epilepsy can often be successfully treated, proper identification and diagnosis is essential, particularly for clinically "silent" forms.

April 26th, 3:00-4:30pm- Aspergers and the Transition into Adulthood
Adults with an Autism Spectrum Disorder may experience continued challenges in maintaining successful personal relationships, regular employment, and meeting related academic and vocational expectations. Media attention tends to focus exclusively on young autistic children while ignoring the needs and challenges of autistic adolescents and adults. This workshop will focus on issues related to the transition into adulthood including the use of supports, programming in high school, resources for autistic college students, vocational planning, social needs, and the challenges they may encounter. This workshop is designed for families, school administrators, CST, and high school teachers, but all are welcome!

May 8th, 4:30-6:00pm- After the Concussion is "Cured"...Long Term Implications and Concerns
Signs and symptoms of a concussion immediately following a serious injury are expected and often times easy to identify. But what happens to a student in the months following an injury…are there long term implications and concerns that educators, parents and coaches should know related to students who have sustained a concussion/brain injury? This workshop will discuss identifying concussion candidates who could benefit from further evaluation and follow-up treatment. Advanced assessment, diagnosis and treatment options will be discussed and practical tools for parents and students to use will be offered. In addition, vocational assistance for individuals with long-term effects of brain injury or concussion will be outlined. This workshop is designed for parents, teachers, therapists, and CST who have attended the workshop on Concussion and Kids, but all are welcome!

May 17th, 2:30-4:00pm-Strategies to Promote Academic Success for School Students with High Functioning Autism and Asperger Disorder hosted by Upper Deerfield School district
Strategies are offered for children diagnosed with High Functioning Autism and Asperger Disorder who may have learning challenges related to executive functioning, reading, math, and writing to promote appropriate educational and IEP planning. May 22nd, 4:30-6:00pm- A New Look at Epilepsy: Epilepsy Localization
Have you been living with Epilepsy all your life and want to know more about advancements available to help with the disease? With electrical source imaging, clinicians at CNNH can now determine where Epilepsy is coming from and what treatment options are best suited. This is exciting news for individuals whose medications have not been suitable or for individuals who have concerns about living with Epilepsy. This workshop is designed for individuals with Epilepsy and their caregivers, but all are welcome!

May 31st, 4:00-5:30pm- Medication Management for Autism
With so many medications offered for individuals with autism, it can be daunting to determine which is the best fit for each individual. This workshop will give an overview of the medications currently available for treating individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and how to properly administer them. This workshop is designed for parents and caregivers.

June 5th, 7:00-8:00pm- Behavioral and Psychiatric Problems Associated with Epilepsy *Webinar Only* hosted by Epilepsy Foundation of NJ
Psychiatric and behavioral issues are common in children and adults with epilepsy. In this webinar, the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in this population will be examined. Causes of psychiatric comorbidities will be discussed. Early recognition and treatment of psychiatric disorders in patients with epilepsy is essential for their quality of life and control of their seizures.

September 11th, 4:30-6:00pm- Cognitive Coaching Rehabilitation and Executive Functioning hosted by Garfield Park Academy
Individuals who have sustained a brain injury or concussion can have long-term effects requiring specialized training strategies and alternative approaches to learning. Cognitive coaching has been successful for many students in addressing academic and life skill roadblocks. This workshop is designed for teachers, therapists and CST, but all are welcome!

September 20th, 9:00-10:30am- Could it Be ADHD: Assessing and Diagnosing the Disorder
The process of diagnosing ADHD requires many steps and gathering a lot of information from multiple sources, especially from families and teachers. Learn how to discern the key symptoms of ADHD at school and home and what type of tests are important to determine the cause of ADHD.

September 25th, 3:30-5:00pm- Surviving School: Bullying and What Schools and Parents Can Do
This presentation will educate participants about bullying with a specific emphasis on children with Asperger Disorder and High Functioning Autism including possible strategies to prevent and manage bullying within the school environment. This workshop is designed for teachers, administrators and parents.

October 3rd, 3:30-5:00pm- Managing ADHD: At Home and in School
ADHD has exploded in magnitude over the last few decades and more children are being prescribed medication for this condition than ever before in history. This workshop will review how a neurobiological approach to ADHD assessment impacts treatment options; the neurological and medical mimickers of ADHD; and the risks and benefits of many popular treatment interventions. This presentation also highlights the need to optimize or integrate behavioral and educational interventions prior to using medications. This workshop is designed for teachers, CST and parents, but all are welcome!

October 16th, 3:30-5:00pm- Brain Injury and Transition into Adulthood
Students with brain injuries who are turning 18 – 21 years old and graduating from local school-district programs, are faced with having to make vocational and life choices. Seemingly daunting, this transition can be seamless, smooth and successful with planning and supports in place. This workshop offers a fresh approach to addressing this life transition issue, including conducting vocational assessments and offering intensive and extensive career coaching to establish an important framework for long-term success and satisfaction. This workshop is designed for parents, individuals with brain injury and career counselors, but all are welcome!

October 19th, 1:30-3:00pm- Behavior Strategies for Addressing ADHD at Home and in School
Learn how to successfully manage AdHD in your home and classroom using strategies that include how to effectively manage time, utilize visuals to support verbal language, and redirect stressful situational variables. This workshop is designed for parents, teachers and CST, but all are welcome!

November 6th, 3:30-5:00pm- Seizures in the Classroom: What to Do and How to Explain It
When an individual experiences an Epileptic seizure, it can be as a surprise to everyone around. This workshop will explore how to identify when an individual is having a seizure, what action to take to keep them safe and how to discuss the situation with others who are witnessing the seizure for the first time. This workshop is designed for teachers, CST and school administrators, but all are welcome!

November 10th, 9:00-12:00pm- CNNH and the Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey's Epilepsy Conference: Exploration and Innovation
The Epilepsy Foundation of NJ (EFNJ) and CNNH have joined forces to deliver an exciting and informational half-day session for people interested in issues related to Epilepsy. Come hear about Cognitive Complications related to Epilepsy, advocacy efforts and other research that is currently being conducted to address challenges related to having Epilepsy. This mini-conference is designed for individuals with Epilepsy, professionals and caregivers.

December 7th, 1:30-3:00pm-Alternative Communications.. Building Working Relationships with Autistic Students
